Read Matthew 12:1-37
S.O.A.P. Matthew 12:36-37
(Scripture. Observation. Application. Prayer.)
S – “But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgement for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted and by your words you will be condemned.”
O – Our words are a direct reflection of our heart. We will be judged by our words because they reveal the truths of our heart. You can’t solve your heart problem just by cleaning up your speech. You must allow the Holy Spirit to fill you with new attitudes and motives. Then, your speech will be cleaned at its source.
A – Simply trying to not say negative things is not going to cleanse my heart of negativity. I must allow the Holy Spirit in and to fill me with new attitudes and motives. A few months back, I found myself allowing a friend to speak ill of another friend. Instead of stopping it, I chose to chime in as a way to connect with my friend and keep her from feeling guilty. However, I feel much conviction and I desire to cleanse my heart of this behavior. I feel the Holy Spirit prompting me to confess and ask forgiveness from my friend whom I had the conversation with. In order to fully repent and allow the Holy Spirit to be at work within us, we must CHOOSE to spend time with God every day. We can make attempts and have good intentions to change our behaviors, but until we realize that the source of life comes only through God and His word, we will not be equipped to stand up to the temptations before us. Only through the power of Gods word and His Holy Spirit within us are we able to resist the temptations of this world. We must choose every day, moment by moment, to let God work through us by His power, not our own.
P – Dear God, cleanse my heart of evil and wicked thoughts that often turn into negative words. I ask you to fill my heart with your Holy Spirit and fill me with new attitudes and motives that you desire, God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
