Matthew 6: The Secret of Giving

Read Matthew 6

S.O.A.P. Matthew 6:3

(Scripture. Observation. Application. Prayer.)

S – “When you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

O – Over and over in chapter 6 of Matthew, Jesus teaches the importance of honoring God in secret. He commands us to not be like the hypocrites who give publicly, fast publicly, pray publicly in the synagogues and street corners, etc. When we do these things in front of others, it’s as if we’re doing it for ourselves to show “our righteousness” and not to truly honor and spend intimate time with our Father in heaven. When we give to others our motives must be pure. It is easy to give with mixed motives or to do something for someone if it will benefit us in return. Believers should avoid all scheming and give for the pleasure of giving and as a response to God’s love.

A – I can apply this to my life by looking for and asking God for opportunities to give secretly. To give when there is no benefit for me in return. To give even if it hurts me a little to do so.

P – God, I pray that you present me with opportunities each day to give in secret. Put people, ideas, and actions on my heart to bless others by giving in secret - to bless out of an overflow of your love for me, expecting nothing in return. Thank you Jesus. Amen!
