Matthew 5: No Promises

Read Matthew 5 (The Sermon on the Mount)

S.O.A.P. Matthew 5:37

(Scripture. Observation. Application. Prayer.)

S – “All you need to say is simply ‘yes’ or ‘no’, anything beyond this comes from the evil one.”

O – Jesus tells us that we should not need to take vows, oaths or make promises as our “yes” should mean yes and our “no” should mean no. We should be truthful in everything we say so we don’t feel the need to add “I promise” to our words. This is from the enemy as he is breeding lies and insecurity within us, allowing us to think we need that extra “I promise” to believe that someone is telling us truth.

A – I will let my yes be yes and my no be no. I will not be tempted to further my commitments with “I promise” or “I swear”. I will be known as a woman of my word! As I already hear my children making “promises” to me, I will correct them with the truth from the Word, teaching them their “yes” or “no” is enough!

P – Dear God, thank you for continuing to pursue my heart in the morning so I can spend my time abiding in you. Lord, let your words from the Sermon on the Mount penetrate deep in my heart. Your sermon was to teach us that what truly matters is truthful obedience from the heart. Let my heart be full of you! Let your Holy Spirit fill me with grace, humility, love, mercy, and obedience. I love you and thank you, God. Amen.
